United Nations University launches OpenCourseWare Portal

United Nations University launches the UNU OpenCourseWare Portal, which offers open access to about a dozen courses developed by three of UNU’s Research and Training Centres and Programmes (RTC/Ps) and the Tokyo-based UNU Media Studio. The intent of the UNU OpenCourseWare Portal is to make the course materials used by UNU RTC/Ps available on the web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world. African e-learning ’needs human capacity building’

A survey on learning via technology (e-learning) in Africa suggests that expertise and management skills of the practitioners, not just advancing infrastructure and hardware, are key to the success of e-learning on the continent.
The survey of people involved in e-learning in 42 African countries was released at the eLearning Africa conference in Accra, Ghana, last week (28–30 May).

Call for projects 2008 for the creation of new ODL

The Scientific Council of the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) had a meeting in Paris on May 25, 2008, and selected 14 projects of open and distance learning (including 9 of Sub-Saharan Africa), representing 16 degrees (3rd year of license, the 1st and 2nd year of master), from 10 institutions of higher education of 8 Francophone countries of the South. Six additional projects are subject to additional information.

African education ministers call for more collaboration in the continent on ICTs in education

UNECA and the Global eSchools and Communities Initiative (GeSCI) co-organised a Ministerial meeting on ICTs in education on Wednesday, 28 May 2008 at the Conference Center in Accra , Ghana . The meeting took place as a pre-conference event prior to eLearning Africa 2008 Conference, taking place from 29 – 30 May 2008 on the theme “ICTs for development, education and training”.

The 3rd International conference on ICT for Development, Education and training took place from the 27th to 30th of May 2008 in Accra, Ghana. The researchers of PanAf attended this meeting and presented papers during a special session entitled “Panafrican Research Agenda on the Pedagogical Integration of ICTs”

Res@TICE: second call for projects

54 000 young Senegalese trained on ICT

Dakar, Senegal - Senegalese Minister of Youth and Employment of young, Mamadou Lamine Keita, announced Tuesday, a training programme in information technology and communication (ICT) for 54 000 youth in the country.
Among the beneficiaries of this training programme in ICT, 40% are girls.

ICTs in Education Prize: call for nominations

"Digital Opportunities for All: Preparing Students for 21st-Century Skills" is the theme of the 2008 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education.
Funded by the Kingdom of Bahrain, the US$50,000 prize is divided between two winners. Every year, this prize rewards activities that demonstrate best practice as well as creative use of ICTs to enhance learning, teaching and overall educational performance.
