NIGERIA - Implications of Science and Technology Education in Nigeria for Formal Sector Employment of Women / HASSAN Omowumi
Titre : NIGERIA - Implications of Science and Technology Education in Nigeria for Formal Sector Employment of Women Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : HASSAN Omowumi, Auteur; ADEBOWALE Boladale, Auteur; OLOAPA Olawale, Auteur; OLADIPO Oluwatosin, Auteur Editeur : ERNWACA Nigeria Année de publication : 2011 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : It has been argued that “… the only thing that endows a competitive edge on an organisation or a nation is what it knows, how it uses what it knows, and how fast it can know something new” (Prusak, 1996; Prusak and Davenport, 1998). We observe that the key cause of the competitive gap between nations and organisations is knowledge. Such a study as this will bridge the knowledge gap between S&T education and women employment in the formal sector. In other words, a better statistical understanding of S&T education and women participation in the formal sector will inform and improve policy making at the national, regional and international levels. Second, highly skilled workers drive technological innovations through research and economic development; this research will provide information on how to increase the female proportion of the nation’s highly skilled workers. Third, for Nigeria to attain the employment generation component of MDGs, there is need to examine the S&T education structure in place that will enhance the right input of human resources to feed the formal sector for overall growth and development. Fourth, since formal sector employment especially at productive, managerial and decision making level is fed majorly from S&T higher education sector; a study of this nature will contribute to demand-driven education and improved highly-skilled human resource. Fifth, women make up about 50% of the population in Nigeria (Ugbomeh, 2001; Ezeila, 2001). Thus, a mass number of women with appropriate and relevant S&T higher education will bring about significant contribution and growth in formal sector employment. Finally, given the high rate of unemployment especially among graduates from higher institutions; there is need to appraise requirements of formal sector employment viz-a-viz S&T training received from higher education.
